Iraqw

East Africa • language: Iraqw

The Iraqw are a people of the Central Highlands of Tanzania in East Africa. Their belief in egalitarianism has led to territorial expansion and geographic segmentation. Most Iraqw remain loyal to traditional religious beliefs that revolve around the immortality of individual souls, their eternal residence in the Iraqw homeland, and a cosmos dominated by Lo’a, a good spirit, and Netlangw, a bad spirit. The migration of the Iraqw people from the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers took place 500 years ago. The Iraqw are known for their advanced irrigation systems.
