Ghana • Language: Ga, Dangme
Sometimes called Gamashie, are a subgroup of the Mina and Ewe, groups in the southern reaches of Ghana, Benin, and Togo. They are primarily coastal and urban people, many making a living as fishermen. The Ga people celebrate the centuries-old Homowo festival annually, which translates as "hooting at hunger." It is a food festival celebrated in remembrance of a great famine that hit the Ga people in the sixteenth century.
