The Sotho are one of the largest ethnic groups in southern Africa. Most of the Sotho live in Lesotho. And speak Sotho, a Bantu language. The Sotho are a Bantu ethnic group. As part of their ancestral worship is a belief in the Supreme Being, who is referred to as Modimo. Other lesser deities are also worshipped, and ritualistic practices, like rainmaking dances, are part of the religion. Sotho is a written language with a rich literary tradition. The Sothos are subdivided into three regional groupings, based on political loyalties to the chiefdom. In recent decades, there has been an increase in farmers transitioning to commercial agriculture, and many men have left home to work in mines, plantations, towns, and cities in South Africa and Lesotho.
